Maidaan Movie Review: IMDB Rating in Hindi: Ajay Devgan starrer ‘Maidaan’ has been released and it is currently getting a decent response on social media. Ajay Devgan’s acting in the film is being praised a lot. The film is competing with Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff’s film ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ at the box office.

Sports drama has been a favourite subject of Bollywood filmmakers and if that sports drama is based on the life of a sportsperson, then the makers enjoy presenting it with passion, enthusiasm and patriotism. The audience also welcomes such films wholeheartedly. This is the reason why in the past, films like ‘Chak De India’ (hockey), ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ (running), ‘Mary Kom’ (boxing), ‘Dangal’ (wrestling), and ‘Panga’ (kabaddi) have received a lot of love from the audience. Taking this series forward, director Amit Sharma has presented the story of the rise of India’s legendary football coach Syed Abdul Rahim and the golden era of Indian football. That too on the occasion of Eid. The icing on the cake in this beautiful story is Ajay Devgan’s heart-touching performance as Syed Abdul Rahim, which is no less than an Eidi for the audience.

Story of ‘Maidaan’

Indian football team’s coach Syed Abdul Rahim (Ajay Devgan) in the 1950s, by insulting his opponents in the Football Association, forms a new football team by selecting budding football players from every corner of India, so that the team can hoist the flag of India at the world level in this game. Actually, in 1952, the Indian football team had to face a crushing defeat in the Olympics and now Rahim is ready with a new team, equipped with the efficient techniques and strategies of the game.

Rahim’s team has promising players like Chuni Goswami, PK Banerjee, Peter Thangaraj, Jarnail Singh, Pradyut Burman. Rahim lives with his wife Saira (Priyamani), a son Hakim, daughter and mother. In the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, he manages to come fourth with his team. But despite the team’s excellent performance in the 1960 Rome Olympics, they are unable to qualify. Just after this, Rahim is removed from the post of coach, becoming a victim of the politics of his opponents and sports journalist (Gajraj Rao).

Rahim had not yet been able to bear this shock when he comes to know that he has lung cancer. He has little time left to live. In such a life-threatening time, Rahim’s wife Saira inspires him to coach again. This time Rahim puts his life at stake. Crossing all the obstacles with the passion of his team, he defeats South Korea in the finals of the Jakarta Asian Games in 1962 and gives the country the pride of the gold medal.

‘Maidaan’ Movie Review

The specialty of Amit Sharma’s direction is that while showing the biography of football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, he never glorified this golden boy of football nor made it melodramatic. In the first half of the film, they take time to establish the characters and the story, but the interest increases in the second half and the audience is unable to blink their eyes in the last 20 minutes.

Yes, the three-hour runtime definitely makes the film long. The film could have been made a little crisper. Some scenes seem flat, but the director has succeeded in effortlessly showing Rahim’s innovative sports techniques, strategy and revolutionary approach. On screen, he shows historical football matches in a thriller style. Tushar Kanti Ray and Fyodor Lias’ cinematography is commendable. Kolkata of the 1950-60s has been beautifully depicted. The director has beautifully used real footage to give the film a credible look. The costume department has done its job well. VFX has also been used well to depict that era. AR Rahman’s soothing music takes the story forward.

Watch Trailer

Four-time National Award winner Ajay Devgan shines like the sun as Syed Abdul Rahim this time too. Unlike ‘Singham’, his brilliant performance in the character is calm, restrained and dignified and brings tears to the eyes in many scenes. His style of smoking cigarette strengthens the character. Priyamani has beautifully executed her role as Saira. Gajraj Rao makes the evil and negative sports journalist memorable with his style.

There are many new faces in the film and everyone has performed well. Amartya Ray as Chuni Goswami, Chaitanya Sharma as PK Banerjee, Tejas Ravishankar as Peter Thangaraj, Devinder Singh as Jarnail Singh, Sushant Vedande as Tulsidas Balram, Rishabh Joshi as SS Hakim and Amandeep Thakur as Ram Bahadur Chhetri have done a good job. The supporting cast is in accordance with the subject.
